Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: My interest was piqued early in 2014 when I was looking for a new sport to play, I contacted Green Eggs and Slam and she encouraged me and put me in contact with Freshmeat dates. Then I took the opportunity to see a game at the CUP as part of Atlanticade and I was HOOKED!

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

A: At first it was that it was a new sport to try and the girls looked super cool. As my involvement grew, I was attracted to the physical challenge that it provided and all the love and support that I got from my new derby family. .

Q: When did you join?

A:  I started Freshmeat in September 2014.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: Oh that is such a hard question! I have so many favorites. The athletic challenge, the intense game (derby is by far the most intense sport I have ever played), the whole derby community <3, the friends, the sense of belonging, the empowerment! I love it all. After I moved back home from 10 years living out west, I struggled to find a spot where I felt like I truly belonged – derby has given me that. I feel like I can really be myself – up, down, quirky or serious – and my derby family accepts me. Also, I think the spirit of derby – women being healthy and feeling empowered – helps me be a better role model for my two daughters. They learn a lot from participating in the bouts and seeing women of all shapes and ages go out on the track and get it their all.

Q: What is your day job?

A: I teach junior high, language arts and social studies.

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A: Derby has given me the drive to stay fit and to push myself to reach a higher level of fitness. It has given me a whole new social circle, a family, who are so much fun and a wonderful support system. It has exposed my daughters to a new sport that encourages women to be tough and gorgeous all at the same time and teaches them (and me) that when people doubt you can do something – you go out and ROCK it!

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2016?

A: Agility – my goal for this year is to become a stronger, faster, more agile skater which will lead into being a better blocker and better able to help my team jam when needed.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: DO IT!!! I mean that! Derby will challenge you, excite you, invigorate you and welcome you like no other experience! If you give it all that you can – it will give you back so much!

Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: I first heard about roller derby on PEI when it was first introduced to the Island. Due to time, finances and other commitments it just didn’t line up to be in the cards for me. I’ve always wanted to try it but it took a push from Queen Wasp in 2014 to finally get me on skates.

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

A: At first it was the intensity and it just looked fun. After joining I knew it was MUCH more than that. I’ve become part of a new family. It’s the friendships, acceptance, diversity, support, and inclusion for all.

A: I joined the Fresh Meat program in 2014 and haven’t looked back.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: There are too many favourites to list. Some highlights are team building, pushing myself to grow, supporting others in their journey, meeting and building friendships with incredible humans from other leagues, and challenging myself in new ways.

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2016?

A: So many derby goals!!! I am currently working with spRAWkit to help increase my strength, endurance, and recovery. I am hoping to increase my jamming skills and begin working on blocking.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: Trust yourself! Try on skates once, twice, buy a pair and never take them off. Everyone has a different derby experience but it’s so rewarding in so many different ways!

Juniors have no fear and will try anything without hesitation. We welcome everyone from the age of 6 and up to come try on gear and see for yourself. If you’re interested in derby come watch a practice, volunteer for a bout, try on gear, and ask questions. We are here to support your journey!

If you have any questions regarding Bootleg City Roller Derby, either the Adult or Junior Learn To Skate Programs, email bcrdrecruitment@gmail.com and I’d be happy to help anyone begin their roller derby journey!
