Q: When did you join?

A: I signed up for the last fresh meat we had in the winter, graduated and got my minimums, then had to take a step back due to work. I stayed involved volunteering and helping promote the sport through various events in PEI and Moncton.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: My favorite part of derby is being around a group of powerful women, sometimes you forget we are powerful and this group certainly reminds you of that.

Q: What is your day job?

A: My day job is support center analyst at Buchanan Technologies, I handle IT incidents and network support.

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A: Roller derby has changed my life in many ways, I miss being athletic as I was involved with many sports growing up and derby really caught my attention, the fact that these women beat the heck out of each other inly to build each other back up is amazing, the support and encouragement is across all teams and leagues.

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2016?

A: My derby goals for 2016 are to get back on track with my training and get placed on a team and to also take part in as many training camps as possible to soak up all that amazing advise.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: For anyone out there that wants to try derby my advise is just do it! Get the gear or approach a skater to try it out, there is used gear out there and we are happy to answer any questions, if you think you may need derby in your life then you do, grab some skates and give it a try, it is challenging, it is rewarding and I love it!

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

A: It just looked like fun..and a challenge too, since the only time I ever had quads on was 30+ years ago, for about 2 hours.

Q: When did you join?

A: September 2013 I signed up for freshmeat.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: The people – as a group, they are so accepting. Have a particular skill causing you trouble? someone will walk you through the basics, and most importantly give you encouragement.

Q: What is your day job?

A: I’m in retail.

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A:  Well for one thing, I lost my ‘personal bubble’ haha. I was always uncomfortable in crowds, now not so much. I have met some amazing women – and men- through derby. And, I’ve stopped listening to people who tell me I’m ‘too old for that foolishness.’ (you’re never too old for foolishness haha)

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2016?

A: Keep learning, improving my skate and ref skills, and recognize that, if I’ve made a ‘bad call’ own it and let it go.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: C’mon down check us out. Don’t think you have what it takes to be a player? You will be surprised at what you can do. Be a Ref, (which is awesome, we get to see the whole game up close and personal!) Be an NSO or volenteer, most likely, after doing that, you will want to play….and you will be enthusiastically welcomed!
