Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: I heard about derby from my cousin Mosie O’Pummel the year she started at a family get together. I wanted to join then, but it was quite new and not a lot of information was available. I had taken a few years in karate and needed another sport to get some exercise.

Q: When did you join?

A: I heard about it again a year later when I started to see signs for games around Summerside. I volunteered to NSO (non-skating official) for a game, which they put me on the penalty board. I had never seen or knew what a derby game was. It was exciting and I wanted to be a part of it. I have been in fresh meat for 2 years. Since I’m not a strong athlete or have never skated in my life, my skating skills are still not where I want them to be. I was asked to help referee last year when they were short. I think I found my place in derby. I feel like I have a spot with my fellow zebras. This year I’ve also been asked to be head NSO in Summerside. A job that’s just as rewarding. My children and boyfriend have gone to every game I’m in and stand by me 100% and won’t let me give up or put myself down. They are so proud of what I’ve done, they are the reason I won’t quit.

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2016?

A: It’s still a learning lesson from game to game, I’m becoming a more confident person in life because of derby. My goals for next year is to learn better transitions, tomahawk stop, and to really know my penalty calls. Look out then ladies.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: My advice to anyone who wants to join is just do it, even if your alone. I was suppose to join with a friend who backed down after the open house. I didn’t, and I’m so glad I made myself go to that first fresh meat class alone, and to every practice since.

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

Q: When did you join?

A:  I joined at the beginning on the first open house night at Holland College.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: Derby is a challenging sport in many ways such as physically, mentally and in your technical skill and it changes so fast. So I really enjoy it when I finally master a skill that I have been having trouble with and the support that you get from your teammates to help you.

Q: Favorite team to play against?

A: I don’t really have a favorite team to play against as some of my favorite games are black and white scrimmages, they are so fun.

Q: What is your day job?

A:  During the days I’m an Operating Room nurse and mommy.

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A: Roller Derby has changed my life in many ways. It has made me organized with trying to juggle practices and travel for games and making sure my kids are looked after, but mostly it has made me stronger, more confident and I learned to put myself first and do what’s best for me in all areas of my life. Also it has helped me to become more physically fit because if it wasn’t for derby I wouldn’t be getting up at 530am to go to the gym before work.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: If you’re thinking about joining derby do it, you won’t regret it. It will be challenging but so rewarding. It’s so good for the soul. And be careful because it becomes addictive.
