League: Bootleg City Roller Derby
Team: Bootleg Betties
Position: Blocker

Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: I was talking to a friend about how roller derby was becoming a thing and about how we both thought it would be something that was very me and I decided to research if that was a thing I could do on PEI and oddly enough that was right around the time that Magic Pony was starting the magic that is derby.

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

A: I played rugby for years so I was very drawn to full contact sports and I really liked the attitude and vibes that went with roller derby. It was very powerful and had sort of a punk rock spirit to it.

Q: When did you join?

A: I joined right at the beginning. I didn’t have skates right away but I drug myself to watch everyone strap on their skates and knew I needed to get my own.

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: I love how everything is run by people who just want to be there. Bouts have a really cool community feel to them because we need our community to make them happen.

Q: What is your day job?

A: I am a junior developer analyst.

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A: Roller derby has given me tons of friends and I honestly can’t remember what life was like before it. I can’t imagine if I didn’t join and meet all the crazy awesome people I have!

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2015?

A: To avoid any more injury and get my strength back in my knee–and generally play the best derby I can.

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: Don’t let fear hold you back.

Derby name: Kelamity
Number: 242
AKA: Kelly Finlayson
League: The Wharf City Rollers
Position: Blocker

Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: First heard about derby during an open house in the freezing cold rink up in Richmond. I am by far the least athletic & co-ordinated person yet the girls insisted that I would get the hang of it, they were very encouraging and seemed like fun. I signed up that day or later that week for fresh meat. I feel like that was 4 years ago?

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: It’s just plain fun! & crazy!!!!

A: I feel more confident and not as un-coordinated as I used to be, even in my day to day routine (mind you not sure my teammates would agree!).

Q: Do you have any derby goals for 2015?

A: Wish I could attend all practices & games. :(

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: Go, try, have fun, playing/practicing is always an adventure! Also your kids will think you are super cool! Haha!!!!
