Q: When did you first hear about roller derby on PEI?

A: I heard of roller derby about 4 years ago from a couple of girls I knew in Moncton. It sounded and looked fun to me but I wasn’t sure if there was a league here on PEI so I kind of forgot about it. About a year or so after that I saw an ad for a roller derby open house on a friends facebook page whom I hadn’t seen in 10yrs (the lovely emMa MAe). So I went and checked it out and loved it!

Q: What attracted you to roller derby?

A: Well I used to roller skate a lot as a kid at The Roller Tech (Moncton’s version of Skate Country) so I knew I would love being on skates. And also I had never been on a sports team before and I kind of wanted to see what that would be like. The idea was new and exciting to me!

Q: When did you join?

A:  I do believe it was in 2013 that I played my first season!

Q: What is your favorite part of the sport?

A: There are a lot of favorites but my top 2 would be (1) All the great people I’ve met from both leagues and (2) Being part of such a supportive and wonderful team! I am always SO nervous before a game but the minute I step foot in that change room and see all my smiling and wonderful teammates it’s comforting and I begin to feel at ease!:) Until I hear ” 5 seconds” of course and then all the nerves come back..hehe!!

Q: What is your day job?

A: I work seasonally as a waitress in Victoria By the Sea. And I am the mother of 2 amazing daughters!

Q: How has roller derby changed your life?

A: Well in quite a lot of ways. It reunited me with a great friend, I’ve met a ton of wonderful new people, but most of all it helped me come out of my shell. I’ve always dealt with shyness and social anxiety but playing roller derby somehow helped me with that..it helped me gain confidence in myself!

Q: Do you have any upcoming derby goals?

A: Yes I’d like to not be so nervous when I get on the track for a bout. I’d like to play and feel how I do at practice, but for some reason when it’s an actual game my nerves get the best of me. And also I’d like to work on my endurance!

Q: Any advice for people who may be interested in joining?

A: I’d say just give it a shot! If the skating\playing aspect ends up not being for you there are many more roles and fun ways you can still be involved in the derby world. And you will meet some amazing people!!
